Gas, electric, heat pumps and dual fuel: what actually fits a Missouri winter

Crawford's installs and repairs gas furnaces, electric furnaces, heat pumps and dual fuel systems on all brands, including Goodman and York equipment, residential and commercial. A dual fuel setup pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace and switches between the two automatically, so the heat pump handles the mild stretches of the season and the furnace takes over once the outdoor temperature drops far enough that a heat pump alone would be working too hard to keep up.

That switch point is where the energy savings actually live. Running a heat pump on the coldest nights of a St. Robert winter usually costs more than a gas furnace would for the same output, so a dual fuel system is set up to let the furnace carry that stretch instead of burning electric heat strips around the clock. Crawford's sizes and sets that switchover for the house it's going into, not off a factory default.

What a Missouri summer does to an undersized system

A system sized too small for the house it's cooling doesn't fail outright, it just runs constantly and still loses the fight against humidity. Short cycling, the unit kicking on and off in quick bursts instead of running a full cooling cycle, is one of the clearest signs. It leaves the house feeling clammy even once the thermostat says the target temperature has been reached, because the coil never stays cold long enough to pull real moisture out of the air.

It's also one of the most common calls Crawford's gets in July and August: a homeowner whose air conditioner is running near constantly and the house still doesn't feel right. Sometimes that's a sizing problem from an install years ago, and sometimes it's a system that used to fit the house fine until ductwork or airflow issues crept in. Either way, it gets diagnosed before anything gets replaced.

Chapter 03

Static pressure before refrigerant: what gets measured first

Before touching a refrigerant gauge, Crawford's checks static pressure with a manometer, reading it in inches of water column (inWC). Static pressure is the resistance the blower motor is pushing against to move air through the ductwork, the filter, the coil and the registers. When it's too high, the blower is straining against that resistance instead of moving the volume of air the system was designed to move, and refrigerant charge readings taken on top of that problem can be misleading.

A dirty filter, undersized return ductwork, or closed and blocked registers can all drive static pressure up. Chasing a cooling complaint with refrigerant alone, without checking that number first, is how a system ends up overcharged or undercharged trying to compensate for an airflow problem that was never actually about the refrigerant.

Heat pumps and freezing rain: switch to emergency heat

Crawford's posted the same piece of advice to their customers twice, in February 2022 and again in January 2025, because Missouri keeps handing out the same weather and people keep needing to hear it: "Freezing rain can accumulate on the fan blades and could cause damage to the heat pump. So if you are capable, turn your heat pump to emergency/auxiliary heat to prevent damage during the freezing rain."

Every heat pump thermostat has an emergency or auxiliary heat setting for exactly this reason. Switching to it during an ice event takes the outdoor unit's fan out of the equation entirely, so there's nothing spinning for ice to build up on or damage. It's a setting worth knowing how to find before the forecast calls for it, not while the freezing rain is already coming down.

Repair or replace: the comparison check and the flat rate

Whether a heating or cooling problem ends in a repair or a full replacement, Crawford's prices the job the same way it prices a service call: a flat rate, quoted before anyone drives out, with a comparison check built in so a homeowner can run that number against anybody else in town before committing to it.

That's a deliberate choice, not just a policy line. A repair or replacement quote that only gets explained after the fact is exactly the kind of thing a comparison check is meant to catch, and Crawford's would rather a customer run that check than take the quote on faith.
