Moisture, allergens and what a filter can actually do

A filter's job is to catch what's moving through the air handler before it recirculates through the house. The finer the filtration, the more it catches, but also the more resistance it adds to the airflow the blower has to push through, which is exactly why the right filter for a given system isn't automatically the finest one on the shelf. A standard one inch filter at the return grille is the baseline every forced air system already has, and it's doing some of this work whether anyone thinks about it or not. A whole home air cleaner is a step beyond that: a dedicated unit installed at the air handler itself, built to filter a much larger volume of air more thoroughly than a thin panel filter changed every month or two ever could.
Which one makes sense depends on the house and the household. A family dealing with allergies or a pet-heavy home gets more out of a whole home air cleaner than out of upgrading the return filter alone, while a lighter-use home might be well served by staying on a good return filter and a regular change schedule. Missouri doesn't sit still on humidity, and neither does the equipment that manages it. A whole home humidifier, tied into the furnace, adds moisture back into dry winter air, the kind of dry air that cracks skin, static-shocks doorknobs and leaves wood floors and furniture contracting through a heating season.
A dehumidifier does the opposite job in the summer, when a St. Robert July can leave a house feeling clammy even with the air conditioner running.
